Look for the Navy's newest amphibious warship USS NEW YORK (LPD 21) to grace the Manhattan skyline as she eases into a Hudson River berth on November 2 prior to her commissioning on November 7, 2009.
Preceded by a variety of citywide and onboard activities, the ceremony will transform USS NEW YORK (LPD 21) from a newly constructed military vessel to an active component of the United States Navy.

With seven and a half tons of Twin Towers steel welded into her bow, this 21st-century stealth ship will take a piece of New York with her wherever she goes. Her motto, 'Strength Forged through Sacrifice: Never Forget' pledges an undying commitment to freedom's defense.
The traditional order, 'Man your ship and bring her to life!' to USS NEW YORK's first skipper -- Commander Curt Jones, USN -- will convert the vessel, officers, crew and components of LPD 21 into a fully integrated, ready-for-duty warmaking machine.
The USS New York will dock at Pier 88 on the Hudson River to be formally inducted into the United States Navy at a shipboard ceremony Nov. 7.
The USS New York will be open to the public, free of charge from Nov. 4 though 11. The opening times:
Wednesday, Nov. 4 - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Thursday, Nov. 5 - 1 to 4 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 8 - 9 a.m. to noon
Monday, Nov. 9 - 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Tuesday, Nov. 10 - 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 11 - 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Pier 88 is located at 48th Street, just north of the Interpid Sea Air Space Museum.
USS Intrepid
Following a 2 year leave for restoration and renovation, the Intrepid Museum Complex now boasts new exhibits, interactive elements, newly opened areas of the ship and a completely restored aircraft collection, all along side the former USS Growler submarine and British Airways Concorde. Her home at Pier 86, open to the public, has also been completely renovated and now features a welcoming, park-like atmosphere.
The new Intrepid Museum is a unique journey through spectacular interactive exhibits and virtual, multi-sensory technology. Located at the new, park-like Pier 86, the complex boasts 30 restored aircraft.

PLEASE NOTE: USS NEW YORK will be open for public visiting for several days during the ten day period, November 2-11, when she will be in New York City, and those dates and times will be posted on the official commissioning website in October.
